How to Build Google Traffic to a New Website using SEO strategies [Video]

Easy Ways to Get Traffic to Your New Website

Launching a new website and watching it sit at zero visits is one of the most common experiences in this business. It is also one of the most frustrating. I covered this in Episode 10 of my SEO Show with my co-host Jonathan Denwood, and I want to put the main points down here for anyone who has just launched and is wondering why nothing is happening. Part of the Weekly SEO PodCast Series on David Quaid SEOtv.

How to See Site Traffic

The first thing I tell people is to stop staring at the analytics dashboard waiting for a line to appear. In the early days, you are not looking for traffic so much as looking for signals. A handful of branded searches, a few impressions in Search Console, a click or two from a directory listing. That is what a new site looks like when it is working. If you only count sessions, you will convince yourself nothing is happening when the groundwork is actually being laid.

Track Site Traffic Against Authority, Not Content Volume

Most beginners put all their energy into content. I understand why, but it is only half the picture. Google needs signals of authority and relevance before it will put a new domain into the top three positions, and the top three is where the real clicks live.

I think of ranking power as a long equation where the factors are multiplied together. If one of the big factors, authority in particular, is sitting at zero, the whole result stays at zero. You can publish a hundred pages, a thousand, ten thousand. Zero multiplied by anything is still zero. Time and early authority signals matter far more than people expect, and waiting months before you start building them just pushes everything back.

How to View Site Traffic the Way Google Does

On the show I used a local café as an example. Call it Cuppa John’s. In the first few weeks, almost every search that lands on that site is for the brand itself: opening hours, the menu, the address, whether dogs are allowed. Those brand searches and clicks start building an association between the name and the topic.

Over time Google widens that association. People start searching “Cuppa John coffee,” then related terms, and the authority compounds from there. The lesson is that early branded visibility plus clear topical connections help a new site get noticed and grow beyond pure brand queries. Anything that makes that connection obvious on day one speeds up the process.

Web Traffic Site Fundamentals: Exact Match Domains

An exact match domain closely matches a primary keyword. Something like sasscrm.com rather than an invented brand name. Pure branded domains are still the popular choice, and I am not telling anyone to abandon theirs, but an EMD can give a new site a head start on relevance for competitive terms that would otherwise need a lot more links and a lot more time.

They are not magic. For plenty of new projects, though, they are a sensible part of the launch plan because the domain itself is aligned with what people are already typing into the search box.

Traffic to Site for Local Businesses

If you are a local business, the path is clearer and usually faster.

Claim and fully fill out your Google Business Profile. Then get properly involved in the community. Run events with non-profits, do joint promotions with neighbouring businesses, sponsor a local cause.

These activities generate relevant mentions and links on their own because your partners promote whatever you did together. The links look natural because they are natural. They come from real relationships rather than a cold outreach spreadsheet. Almost no successful business enters a market completely alone, and those partnerships are what create your earliest signals.

SEO Increase Web Traffic for SaaS and Online Businesses

For SaaS or any business without a physical location, I talked about what people now call parasitic SEO. In practical terms, it means building presence and authority on platforms that already have traffic and trust: LinkedIn, YouTube, relevant forums, trade publications.

You create content there, join conversations, establish yourself as someone worth listening to, and earn natural mentions and links back to your own site. The important part is where those links point. Deep links to product pages, feature pages and resource pages are worth far more than another link to the homepage. You are borrowing the authority of established platforms to generate early visibility while your own domain catches up.

SEO Traffic Research Hack That Costs Nothing

One of the more practical tips from the episode involves the spammy link seller emails and spreadsheets that most people delete on sight. Those sellers have already done the research. They have found keywords and domains that can rank, because otherwise their links would be worthless.

Mine those lists for keyword ideas, then put the promising domains into Bing Webmaster Tools to see what they rank for. It is unconventional, but it is free, and it is a decent starting point for finding low competition keywords.

How to Find Web Traffic Without Thousands of Backlinks

You do need authority signals. You probably need fewer of them for initial traction than you think, especially if you start from strong relevance through an EMD, local signals or platform presence, and you focus on quality topical links rather than raw numbers.

The priority is getting those first meaningful ranking signals and clicks so the compounding can begin. Build content and wait, on its own, ignores this requirement entirely.

Web Traffic Ratings and the Data Problem

Jonathan and I also got into a few longer term topics. Trade publications and platforms like Connectively for building expert authority. The data quality issues in backlink tools, which I sometimes call Google poisoning, where the numbers you are reading do not reflect what Google actually sees. Bing’s AI tools. The direction of LLM powered search and hyper personalisation.

All of that matters, but none of it changes the foundational advice for a brand new site. Relevance plus early authority signals. Everything else is built on top of that.

Analysis Web Traffic: What to Take Away

  • Topical Authority = building as a day one priority, not something you schedule for month four.
  • Use brand searches and clear topical associations, and consider an EMD, so Google connects your site to the right subject quickly.
  • Local businesses should lean hard into Google Business Profile and real community involvement.
  • SaaS and digital businesses should work high traffic platforms systematically to generate early mentions and deep links.
  • Mine unconventional free sources for keyword ideas and go after low competition opportunities while authority grows.
  • Aim for enough relevant signals to break into the top results for some queries. Content volume alone will not get you there.
