ToggleAn Epic new report from Microsoft Clarity and Bing.
The Share of Authority report in Microsoft Clarity is built from AI citations data that Bing and related Microsoft AI experiences generate when they use your pages as sources in grounded answers.
What Share of Authority “is”
-
It is a metric that shows the percentage of total AI citations that your domain receives compared to other domains for the same set of grounding queries where you were eligible.
-
In other words, it is your “slice” of all citations in AI-generated answers for overlapping queries in your niche, acting like a competitive share-of-voice metric for the retrieval/grounding layer.
Example: If your Share of Authority is 21%, that means that, across the AI answers where you appeared as a candidate source, about one in five citations went to your domain instead of a competitor’s.
What it is made from (inputs)
Behind the scenes, the Share of Authority view is calculated from aggregated signals that Clarity unifies across Bing and its AI experiences:
-
Grounding queries: The internal search queries AI systems use to retrieve and evaluate your content before generating an answer.
-
Page citations: Counts of how often each URL from your site is referenced in AI-generated answers (including multiple citations in the same answer).
-
Cited domains set: All domains that were cited alongside you for the same grounding queries.
-
Distribution of citations: How those page-level citations are distributed between your domain and competing domains for overlapping queries.
Clarity pulls these from Bing Webmaster Tools plus its own AI visibility/citation logs, then aggregates them per domain into the Share of Authority distribution.
Where you see it in Clarity
-
You access it under the Clarity dashboards in the AI Visibility → Citations area, where Share of Authority appears alongside page citations, AI referral traffic, queries, and cited pages.
-
The visualization is presented as a competitive or distribution view, helping you see whether, when you are in the consideration set, AI systems tend to choose you or someone else.
