Let’s clear something up, because half the questions on r/SEO come from people who’ve been sold a fantasy: SEO is not “write good content and wait.”
Here’s the whole thing in one line: SEO = Content (Relevance) x Authority (3rd-party validation). That’s it. Everything else is either a proxy for one of those two, or a myth invented to sell you a tool.
Lesson 1: Google doesn’t care about your content
This is the hardest pill for people to swallow. Google can’t judge whether a page is “good” in the abstract — good compared to what? For whom? Quality only exists relative to a search query. Your page isn’t ranked because Google read it and enjoyed it. It’s ranked because it’s relevant to a query and because other parts of the web have validated it.
That validation is PageRank — the founding idea of Google. A link from one page to another is a vote. Votes from pages that themselves have authority and real organic traffic count more. This isn’t 2005 thinking that got outdated; it’s the engine that still runs underneath everything.
